Log of SimRocket video Tape B
abbreviations: T = teacher Ss = students Gp1 = group of students at computer on left Gp2 = group of students at computer on right J = Jamie (student on left) C = Chuck S = Steven K = Kelly B = Brent Tape BSeating arrangement: Computer 1: Steven and Kelly; Computer 2: Brent and Jamie;
T sitting behind them, out of camera 00:00
J's excited "okey dokey" and gesture at screen;
B seats himself next to J at computer 2; J
prompts to test #5, T suggests hitting START and
running Rocket 1, T helps K at computer 1 01:00
S joins K at computer 1, J "lalala"in "cancan"
music; B prompts J to do rocket #5 02:00
J plays with squeaker, K attending to gp 2's
trial; K notes highest height yet 03:00
J: "bouncy ball"; K turns to T: "Something's not
working again"; C gestures to pencil after T
does; T "tracks": "You doing #5?" 04:00
S volunteers that this will be the "lowest" rocket, T asks why,
S & B co-construct answer about "everything extra" being
"bad"; J interjects excited "It blew up", K looks over;
K realizes that he has launched two rockets, "darn"; J squeaks
squeaker, says he has to blow his nose, "squeaks" his nose; K:
"#7 going for 900 here!"; J looks back: "Sorry" then turns
to camera, then says: "I had sugar today."; B explains to K:
"That's because you clicked two hh", then it turns out to be 3! 05:00
J notes 3 rockets: "Sweet! They're paying attention to each
other"; gp 1 waiting; J (after crashing noise): "OW! That hurt!";
S's bored tapping turns to "bongo beating", K beats table above
mousepad with fist holding pencil; J "squeaks": "I need some more
beans"; B notes results: "270, 277, 277 again?"; J says, looking
at screen: "Whohow." ; J "does" two-voice conversation:
"We're gonna crash!" 06:00
S points to screen: "You launched two."; gestures at screen by
B & J; K suggests (offhandedly) that they test again their painted rocket,
see if it still works; T asks if they have built their rockets, Ss respond with
"uh huh's and head nods, then silence; T prompts: "And what have you
done with them?"; multiple Ss start, B explains they launched them off and
the record is seven seconds." T:
"That's great." K?:
"We didn't have to add anything."
T asks how high rockets went, B says uh over the goalposts. J:
"277". B writes number down; K: "5, just launch one",
clicks mouse quickly; B turns back to T: "We just painted them, have to
figure out what the difference is"; T: "Uh huh"; K?: "It
stopped at seven" 07:00
S "knuckles" K's arm, points to screen, both boys write down
number on data sheets; K watches both screens, plays with pen; J gives running
commentary on rocket launch while moving the mouse [which should not be having
any effect since the rocket is in its launch]; B notes this rocket's crazy
quasar engine, J disagrees 08:00
K cries out: "I only touched it once!"; there are (apparently)
two rockets on his screen; he says: "like this" and clicks the mouse
again and actually launches yet another rocket: "oops!"
Then K turns to T, remarking that now "It's going two without even
touching it twice. The other boys all laugh; K changes places with S.
J gives what appears to be instructions to S on how to use the mouse, but
using his squeaker as mouse. When S
takes owwn mouse and orients to own screen, J squeaks his squeaker against his
nose: "This is my nose cover." 9:00
B laughingly asks: "So what number are you guys on?" K:
"5, n there's 4 more to go -- no, three"
B: "number seven". All
the boys watching screen on computer #2; B tries to converse with J, who is
squeaking away. 10:00
K notices camera, asks T: "Whoa, is that thing on?"
T: "Yeah."; K and S both look at camera, confer quietly; J's
cry; the boys' teacher comes into the room, asks after the boys, J says:
"We just click the buttons.", T: "This is data."
Boys' teacher apologizes for not having been in since the beginning,
"How'd that go?" T:
"It's still going." Boys'
teacher gives embarrassed response; J leans over to stare at camera: "Hi
people, look at me!" S elbows
him back up. K: "Jamie?"
J responds: "I'm ( ).
I had sugar." 11:00
B reminds: "OK, two more tests", taps screen with pen; J says:
"Today -- is April Fool's Day." Private
jokes between K & S, B & J. A teacher comes into the room noisily: "Excuse me!"
S launches two rockets: "Oh no!"
S slumps in chair. J says:
"HA HA!" K turns to T:
"Our mouse is too sensitive." T:
"I guess so." B says
"209" and writes, J says: "I saw that" [and doesn't write!],
squeaks. All boys look at J, who is
squeaking, he smiles and says something about a toy. 12:00
K makes remark, T: "You're just too strong." S flexes muscles, does celebration movement, B laughs.
J: "I am too!" Low
talk about doing #8, S reaches across in front of B (to J/keyboard?)
J & B finish their launches, B says: "Now we'll wait for you
(gentlemen)." and smiles. T:
"Well, why don't you guys help them?" B says: "Oh." 13:00
J asks: "How?" K
replies: "Do number five." J:
"Oh." T: "Do some
for them." J: "You're
still on five?" J leans, first
backward, then forward, to look at camera, B swipes his hand at J, covers own
eyes. S celebrates:
"Yes!" J singsongs:
"You clicked once, you the man."
S says something to J, gestures with finger(s), J: "Steven!
Quit it!" S turns to K,
confers, smiling, shakes head; J: "It's gonna crash above the ground."
Tocking out a beat, J jigs in his chair. 14:00
K: "How far'd you go?" J: "287." B: "Is that six?"
J (appearing to tease): "No! (.) Yeah."
J plays with mispronouncing "six", boys look at him, J resumes
squeaking. J: "One two ready
go…", gives sidelong glance and smile at S, who is with quick small
movements shaking his head at J. J
bangs three times on his desk (?) in front of his lap 15:00
J resumes squeaking. B
reports result for #6, K seems to think that the rockets went exactly the same
height; B seems to join discussion, then there is confusion.
J: "My names not James, it's Jamie." J (in foghorn voice): "Watch out. Watch out." K
volunteers to watch this time -- then comparing notes across groups 16:00
B & J tussle over data sheet; S invites K to "high five", K
does; J reports "11 on 7", turns it into a refrain; K & S discuss
while watching screen; J loudly announcing launch, clicks twice, B & J play
over that 17:00
J squeaking. K asks gp 2
about their double launch; B point out this was their first [gesture!] time; J
declares: "He clicked it, it's Brent's fault"; B & J tussle
over data sheet, J turns sheet upside down on B's lap; K notices that gp 2 had
made the rocket go really high, but B points out that they had accidentally
clicked two. The groups
redivide, B pencil wagging, J tocking 18:00
J smiling at B, talks about (his squeaker?), motioning toward belly:
"Stuck under there." S
slumps. The boys here have four
very different postures from each other. J
turns head to look at someone coming into the room, loudly shushes whoever it
is, turns back to his own screen with a smile and a head toss. The door clicks open, female voice speaks, K turns, the puts
index finger to lips and shushes, then S pulls himself back upright and turns,
then quickly turns back to his own screen, all four show "at work"
stance. J talks himself through a
launch: "I have to click once, I don't want to but I have to click
once." B clicks.
As J reads heights, S is rocking in his chair.
B & J co-produce: "389." 19:00
B reports to gp 1, "No no no -- we got 309." J says: "You can hold your stuff now."
T moves from background into camera range: "What do we have left to
do?" K: "Two more
sevens." T: "So if you
each do #7, we'll be done." J
protest that they just did, B, "in your face" to J, says:
"We have to do one more time."
J demands that B not click just yet: "I'll be the race person."
B, reaching over with hand on mouse, says: "It's not a race."
J brings his squeaker to his mouth, counts: "One two", then B
clicks, J gives a disappointed "oh"; J points out: "We didn't
start at the same time," then S points out: "It doesn't matter, it's
just the height." S rocking 20:00
The groups compare heights they are at now, some horseplay.
B tapping raised data sheet; T asks them to share numbers with each
other; squeaker play between B & J; T asks again for numbers; K raises the
question of the need for calculators, T agrees that they need calculators, so K
searches for his, others scramble for calculators and pen(cil)s.
?: "OK ready guys?"
