Lave defines her theory of "situated social practice" by contrast with competing versions of situated cognition:

The social context is more than jsut (1) a secondary environmental constraint. Lave accepts (2) the hermeneutic view of negotiated meanings, but grounds that in (3) a concrete social reality. This provides a theoretical framework in which to analyze learning and critique alienated contemporary forms of learning.
