The following hypothesis is motivated by ideas of Vygotsky, Lave and Donald:

We can push further the most developed forms of human cognition with appropriately designed symbolic tools used in appropriately structured collaborative groups.

The theories can be extended:

Development of mediated cognition need not stop with the young child studied by Vygotsky.

Learning need not remain alienated in modern society or be replaced by pre-modern apprenticeship a la Lave.

Evolution need not end up with the cave men studied by physical anthropology.
