Jean Lave goes a step beyond Vygotsky in viewing the social role in cognition. She stresses group processes over internalized psychological processes. She even defines learning as an aspect of the group processes that mediate it.

Becoming knowledgeably skillful is viewed within the context of "developing an identity as a member of a community."
