Clearly, the figures in the chart are at best order-of-magnitude. Even more, there are serious questions about the dimensions of the graph. But the point from this kind of evolutionary analysis is clear:

As cognition has become mediated by internal and external mechanisms, artifacts and symbolic representations -- and as practices have evolved to take advantage of new capabilities -- the increase in power is astounding.
